What is an Instinct Test?

An instinct test is designed to provide your dog(s) with a safe introduction to livestock and to see what, if any, drive they have to work livestock. Generally, an instructor will take your dog into a small arena with a few dog-broke sheep, and evaluate their working ability.  Normally, the dog will go in twice ... the first time for a few minutes, and then a rest for about 20 minutes, and then a second time for another brief period.

"What should I bring to the Instinct Test?"

You, your dog, a leash, and your camera.  (Still photos are welcome.   Please ask the permission of the evaluator prior to videotaping.)

"What kind of obedience should I teach my dog before the Instinct Test?"

It is nice if your dog has basic manners around people, other dogs, and some sort of lie down or sit, but not necessary. Most dogs pretend to forget whatever they've been taught once they see stock.

"How much does it cost?"

And instinct test is $20.00.
